Special Needs Camp (9th-12th Grade)
Teens must be ambulatory or capable of using a mobility aide (a walker, wheelchair, cane, etc.). Participants also need to be able to communicate consistently and reliably in a verbal or non-verbal way, so instructors and peers can understand their needs and so the teens can fully participate in, and benefit from, the whole camp experience. We kindly ask for an IEP and teacher's letter of recommendation prior to the start of the program to ensure that we can provide the best experience possible for your camper.

Grades: Entering 9th to 12th grade in the Fall

Have you ever wondered what it takes to care for your favorite zoo animals or what careers exist to build a world-class zoo? Get a sneak peek into day-to-day life of working at the Bronx Zoo with this exciting week long session! Teens will have the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of careers in conservation as well as the chance to explore some other unique and unexpected WCS career paths. Throughout the week, campers will engage and participate in outdoor activities, hands-on projects, up-close animal encounters, and field investigations.

Careers with Animals offers a safe yet challenging experience designed to build participants' independence, confidence, and skills. Teens are encouraged to develop meaningful relationships with their peers and appreciate individual connections they make with the natural world while at camp. Although lessons are developed ahead of time, we leave room for individual self-expression with the understanding and flexibility to meet the needs of individuals within the group.

*Please note that our camp educators do receive pre-camp training that includes basic skills for working with children who have special needs. Our instructors possess respect and understanding and they are well trained in interpretive techniques, group management, and activity facilitation. That being said, it is not possible for one program to meet the specific needs of all teens. Careers with Animals is designed to maximize accessibility for all participants and provide the best experience possible with carefully selected activities and encounters. Therefore, we ask that participants be group ready: demonstrate self-care skills without assistance; follow adult direction; show readiness for group participation, including the ability to remain with the group at all times; and follow safety rules independently.
Session Session 1: Mon, Aug 22, 2016 - Fri, Aug 26, 2016 8:00AM - 1:00PM   (13 AVAIL)
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns regarding this program and whether it is an appropriate fit for your teen at jbriley@wcs.org. There is also a possibility that an orientation may be hosted prior to the start of camp in August to meet staff and to answer any further questions. We look forward to seeing you at camp!
