Little Zoo Vets After Camp Program (3rd-5th Grade)

Ever wonder what it would be like to be a zoo veterinarian? What do you do when a tiger has a tooth ache or an elephant has a sore foot? How do you anesthetize a fish or an aardvark? Does a walrus say "ah"? In this after-camp class, students will learn about the different aspects of zoo veterinary medicine taught by WCS veterinarian Dr. John Sykes. Classes will involve real veterinary medicine equipment and supplies. Students will gain an appreciation of what zoo veterinarians do everyday and how animals at the zoo are cared for. Topics may include: how to do a physical exam, anesthesia, darting, digestion, blood tests, x-rays, etc.

This class is designed for 3-5th graders and will meet from 4:00-5:30. Class size is limited to 20 students.

Have you ever wondered how zoo exhibits are designed and how animals are cared for? If you're interested in working at a zoo, then this experience is for you! Learn about the animals' needs and how to identify the components that make an excellent exhibit. Explore a day in the life of a keeper, a zoo vet, animal behaviorist and trainer along with some other unexpected WCS careers like graphic design and field research. Throughout the week, participants will work in teams to design their own exhibit based on what they learn throughout the session and present their work on the last day to family and friends.

Participants will engage in keeper and special project work everyday from 8 - 10am after the first day of the program.

Intro to Zoology is a nice compliment to Wildlife Careers, so feel free to sign up for both sessions!

The animal kingdom is a big and fascinating world to discover, and the Bronx Zoo is the perfect place to investigate it further. Are you interested in pursuing a career in zoology? Come discover what this fascinating field is all about at the Bronx Zoo during this one week session! Participants will get an introduction to animal classification and identification, field techniques used to study wildlife and their habitat, and current efforts by WCS staff to conserve and manage local and global species. In this program, teens will engage in morning installation work every day, starting Tuesday, from 8-10a.m., meet ambassador animals in the classroom, and continue to explore animal behavior, adaptations, and biodiversity through exhibit visits and engaging activities.

Ever thought about catching some zzzs in the company of zebras? How about snoozing with the snow leopards? Well, dreams come true on the Bronx Zoos Family Overnight Safari. After another sold-out series last year, our overnights are back!
As always, you and your family will be treated to fun-filled, educational activities throughout the entire event. Along with some new surprises and a late-night snack to keep the energy going, this extraordinary event is sure to create memories your family will treasure - including a commemorative t-shirt (included in price). Bring your own tent, sleeping bags, and picnic dinner. Beverages, dessert, late-night snack, and breakfast, will be provided. No need for alarm clocks, our vocal sea lions will provide the wake-up call.


Overnights begin at 4:30 PM on Saturday and end at 10:00 AM on Sunday.

Conservation Innovators (grades 9-12)

Conservation Innovators is a inquiry-based learning program that introduces teens to the world of innovation and creation through the lens of animals, scientists, and zoo professionals. During this 6 session workshop series, participants will explore how animals and other organisms act as ecosystem engineers modifying their environment, how animal adaptations inspire technological advancement (biomimicry), and how the Bronx Zoo utilizes innovation to share green practices and to design better exhibit and enrichment opportunities for its animal collection. Teens will have the opportunity to observe ambassador animals up close, visit exhibits, and participate in design challenges. By applying important science, technology, and engineering concepts to real world situations, participants will be equipped with the skills to think and to problem solve like zookeepers, architects, research scientists, and conservationists!

BRIO winners Jose Olivárez and Peggy Robles-Alvarado will open the fall series at the Bronx Zoo in September, presenting from their award-winning bilingual poems, which address immigrant and second-generation experiences through Puerto Rican, Mexican- and Dominican-American points-of-view. They'll address the state of the diversified Latino community in the Bronx, from its mid-20th Century Puerto Rican roots to its contemporary Dominican and Mexican development, and will be joined by program adviser and Bronx Writers Center Director Charlie Vázquez, who will moderate the town hall discussion on contemporary Latino culture and writing in the Bronx. He will also provide any necessary translation.

This program is for adults ages 18 and up. This ticket includes general admission. It does not include parking or total experience tickets.

The wild rumpus begins with a suite of delectable food and beverages while you put your animal trivia to the test. Next, you'll be able to select what adventures you'd like to try out - from up-close animal encounters to a shuttle ride in the dark...you've never experienced the Zoo like this before! Wind down the night with late night snacks in the lounge area before drifting off to sleep listening to the wild sounds of Zoo. In the morning, we'll help rejuvenate you with a hot breakfast and caffeine as well as morning yoga. Wake up alongside the animals of the Zoo as you watch our penguins get their breakfast or, to awake your inner gazelle, join the morning jog through the park before it opens.
