Not All Scientists Wear Lab Coats
Conservation issues remain a critical emphasis in the STEM field. Facing issues such as illegal wildlife trafficking, the climate crisis, plastics pollution, and zoonotic disease spread, WCS professionals are leading the way in innovative and exciting ways to identify solutions. Join us for our newest interactive series exploring STEM careers. In each session, you'll learn about a different conservation issue, meet a WCS staff member actively working on solutions, and discover how their unique pathway to a STEM career was influenced by their identity.

Celebrating International Zebra Day with Dr. Tim Davenport

Africa’s flagship species – elephants, lions, primates, zebra, cheetahs - are some of the most charismatic megafauna on earth. Dr. Tim Davenport, WCS Director of Species Conservation & Science (Africa), has worked on conservation projects for many of these species ranging from designating new reserves on behalf of species of monkey he discovered, to documenting and describing all wildlife corridors in Tanzania. Recently, his team successfully relocated zebra to Kitulo National Park to restore its natural ecology. In celebration of International Zebra Day, join our discussion on charismatic species and species conservation - “What it is and why it 'works'.”

Working in a region that sees too much illegal trade of endangered animals such as pangolins and tiger products, Mridula will discuss the importance of science translating into policy and better implementation of existing law and policy as measures for conservation. She says, “experiences from my childhood and formative years pushed me to take environmental law up as a career.” Tune in as we learn more about her path towards this career, celebrate World Pangolin Day, and explore why conservation really needs a strong interdisciplinary approach to have a chance at creating impact.

As a leader and coordinator of the first WCS Combating Wildlife Trafficking initiative in the Andes Amazon Orinoco region, Yovana Murillo’s principal motivation “is contributing on positive changes for our environment and wild species.” To celebrate World Frog Day, join in as we explore the need to change the behavior of citizens to reduce wildlife trafficking. While some actions are carried out by authorities, the role of citizens in prevention is essential. Yovana will share how her multilingual, Peruvian veterinarian background committed her passions to wild animal conservation for the last ten years.
